The seniors at BHS spend a lot of time preparing for the yearly spring Orchesis performance. They are given a chance to create their own choreographed solo, which is an opportunity for each individual to display their talents. Then at the end of the show, a video is revealed to commemorate the seniors.
The kind of performance a dancer participates in varies significantly each semester; and for junior Kate Hoffman, this is a major highlight of being in Orchesis
“A cool part of being on the team is being able to show creativity through our dances.” Hoffman said. “The dances are usually a good mix between contemporary, which is a slow–paced dance, and jazz, which is a more sassy dance. Most of mine were more upbeat and jazzy.”
Lily Sehnert, a senior on the team, views these songs as a representation of moving on and all the progress they have made.
“I love performing because I can really express my personality and showcase my abilities,” Sehnert said.
For Sehnert, choosing the perfect song and stepping out on stage brings out a unique set of emotions.
“For my solo, I decided on the song ‘Purple Rain’ because it reminds me of my parents, so it’s very sentimental to me,” Sehnert said. “This song also has a very nostalgic tone, so I felt like it was the perfect choice for senior year.”
But despite how much she enjoys dancing, what Sehnert is most grateful for is memories that she has made and the relationships she’s developed.
“I get to bond with new people through each dance. My favorite part of the whole experience is being around my friends,” Sehnert said.
