Due to construction taking place in the auditorium, Barrington High School staff members will lose parking spaces for the 2026-27 year. To adjust to this change, additional spaces will be added to the south end of Main Street, facing Lake Cook Road. Other parking spots will also be added near the intersection on Hart Road and West County Line Road. Visitor parking spaces will be relocated within the Main Street staff parking lot to improve traffic flow and accommodate for increased campus activity during the school day.
This plan is an alternative to an earlier proposal, which consists of the purchase of four homes on Walnut Grove. However, the idea was rejected after residents protested the decision at the November District 220 Board meeting by sharing their concerns on how it could impact them.
But for senior Layla Dajani and other rising juniors and seniors, obtaining a parking spot is a big priority, especially given how hard it is to come across one.
“When you come after 8:10 a.m. there are still spots available but it’s much harder to get one. It’s also annoying to get out of the parking lot because there are so many traffic jams,” Dajani said.
However, this means that over time, the number of students using the Hart Road Lot without proper registration has increased, leading several administration members to send out repeated emails reminding students of the procedure and implementing more severe consequences, such as an immediate ticket when a person parks without a pass to their designated lot.
“As a reminder for students, parking on campus at BHS is a privilege that is based on eligibility criteria,” Assistant Principal Bradley Gillette said. “Students cannot have more than 16 absences per school year, be suspended, have any incidents of academic dishonesty or have any unpaid fees during the current school year to be eligible the following year. This criteria also remains in effect afterward for those who have obtained a school parking tag.”
