To many teenagers, it is first nature to spend their free time on their phone. Phones have become a huge part of students’ everyday lives and continue to rise throughout the years. The average time spent on a phone per day is around 7 hours and 22 minutes.
(All data comes from a survey of 15 BHS students.)
Lucy Bach is a junior and likes to spend her free time browsing social media and online shopping.
“My average screen time from last week is like 9 hours and 30 minutes. My most used app is probably Snapchat because I use it to text my friends. I also spend a lot of time on clothing store websites for shopping and fashion inspo,” Bach said.
Outside of phone usage, Bach likes to stay active.
“When I’m not using my phone I like to go to the gym and workout with my friends. I also like to go on runs and cook,” Bach said.
Lily Richmond, who is a full time athlete, is also in many AP classes. Because of this, the amount of time she spends online is limited in order to reach the success that she strives for.
“My daily average is around four hours. The majority of that is spent on Snapchat which is primarily used for communication,” Richmond said. “When I’m not on my phone I am typically doing schoolwork or studying. It’s very important to me that I limit distractions when I’m engaging in homework so that I can be most efficient. I also spend a lot of my time working out and playing my sport. Sometimes this does include using my phone for music, but not being chronically on it.”
