Mia Fischel’s take on grocery store ice cream!
In grocery stores nowadays, it can be really simple to find whatever you need. However, sometimes you might walk into the freezer aisle looking for frozen pizzas, and end up getting tempted by that cold, delicious ice cream right across from you. Instead of contemplating on which brand to get, I tried three different priced brands of basically the same peanut butter chocolate ice cream- and they did not disappoint.
For some high school students, ice cream at the price of five dollars per pint may not be a bad deal. But for most, the cheaper alternative “Signature” store-brand would do the job. For half the price of other popular brands such as Ben & Jerry’s, $2.50 isn’t a bad price to pay for three times as much ice cream. While it may not have the same “quality,” it comes pretty close. The chocolate was creamier and milkier compared to the other ice creams I sampled, which is probably also what made it the lightest colored. With some chunks of peanut butter (some crunchy), along with P.B. cups, this is basically what you would expect out of a peanut butter cup ice cream (4/5 stars).
Breyers chocolate peanut butter ice cream is slightly more expensive at the price of $5. The packaging claims that it is made with real peanut butter, which is apparent as the peanut butter had a pretty distinctive, but savory taste, almost overpowering the chocolate. The peanut butter almost seems like it comes in thin sheets that melt in your mouth, as well as some bigger chunks. Also, the consistency of the chocolate is a bit thicker and the color is a bit darker than the store brand, but overall they don’t differ very much (4/5 stars).
If you are looking for a more gourmet ice cream, you should try Ben and Jerry’s. This well-known brand may be a few bucks more expensive for only a pint, but comes in unique flavors to spice things up a bit. One of the closest flavors I found to chocolate peanut butter was their “P.B dough” which seemed interesting. This chocolate is definitely a thicker, richer, almost fudge-like consistency compared to the other ice creams. For the smaller quantity, it’s rich enough that you don’t need as much of it. The smooth texture and rich flavors of this chocolate give it an apparent higher quality than the others, but at a smaller quantity. Instead of P.B. dough being mixed into the ice cream, the tiny balls are dispersed throughout it. The aftertaste is a bit weird however, and leaves some crunchiness in your mouth, but overall I liked trying this interesting flavor (3/5).
If you don’t mind spending a few extra bucks on some unique ice cream, by all means try Ben and Jerry’s. But the basic brands are always a delicous choice, and definitely worth trying.
