Creepy celebrations in Covid

It’s been five years since Halloween last fell on a Saturday, and now that it’s finally here, doors are locked and the streets are bare. However, people still got in the spooky spirit this year while following pandemic precautions; some built candy shoots out of PVC pipes for trick-or-treaters, and others stayed in to watch horror movies. No matter how old you are, going all out for a costume is always an option this Halloween, which is what these BHS students did.

Bryce Moorman, BHS ‘22
Junior Bryce Moorman dressed as a maid and planned to hang out with some friends. “I plan on going to my friend’s house who’s having a couple people over, but normally we have a big party for Halloween, and this year we had to limit it,” Moorman said.

Kate Malooley, BHS ‘22- Money Heist

Bre Dunn, BHS ‘22
Junior Bre Dunn spent Halloween with six of her friends, and their costumes were race car themed. Her costume includes a checkered skirt, orange top, and light-up shoes. “This year we are going to my friend Teagan’s house and watching scary movies, baking, and just hanging out. Covid really hasn’t changed Halloween [because] either way we would have done the same thing!” Dunn said.

Julie West, BHS ‘22
Junior Julie West changed her costume a few times, but finally decided on being a cowgirl. “This year I am going to my Aunt’s house to have a Halloween get together with my family. We usually don’t do this, but since COVID doesn’t allow for much trick or treating for my younger cousins, my family came up with this idea and we are all going to wear a costume to my Aunt’s house which I think is pretty fun.” West said.

Jess Marie, BHS ‘23- Hogwarts student

Lili Hurlock BHS ‘24
Freshman Lili Hurlock did fairy makeup and put on some wings, overall keeping it simple for a fairy costume this year. “I had a friend over to my house and we watched Halloween movies and hung out. COVID definitely affected my plans as I wasn’t able to really go out this year, but I still had a lot of fun!” Hurlock said.

Ana M Mitoraj (& Jacob Habib), BHS ‘21
Senior Ana Mitoraj celebrated her birthday with Jacob Habib this Halloween with a small group of friends dressed as greasers and pink ladies. “Jacob and I dressed up as Sandy and Danny because we had actually recently gone to the drive-in movie of it in McHenry. It’s a super fun and easy costume that people can recognize!” said Mitoraj.

Anna Hauk, BHS ‘22
Junior Anna Hauk dressed up as “Anna Banana” this year, and helped give out candy at the end of her driveway while wearing a mask. “This year for Halloween I stayed in with some friends and watched horror movies. With COVID I was definitely more mindful of how many people I was going to be hanging out with and made accommodations so we could be spaced out,” Hauk said.
