The Fall Mum sale took place on Oct 1. 2024 in the Greenhouse. Horticulture and Environmental science teacher Micheal Kedzie, alongside colleagues, ran it. Principal Steve McWilliams also contributed. The Mum plants ranged from small ($15), medium ($25) and large plants ($50). Donations are used to further fund the horticulture program, buy more plants and provide more sales in the future.
Planting and maintenance was a community effort. BHS students and staff had a hand in the process.
“Toward the end of June, we had about, I want to say, about eight students from last year’s horticulture classes and FFA club meet us at the greenhouse, and we planted a whole bunch of mums,” Kedzie said. “The mums were taken care of in the greenhouse throughout the summer by Principal McWilliams, horticulture teachers—including myself—and other staff. We would come to check on them and water them from time to time, and then the students in our classes and the FFA club took care of them once the school year began.”
The event had a turnout of 30+ people and a final sale of 50 mum plants. It was “a little late” in terms of planning, Kedzie explained. The turnout wasn’t exactly what they expected, Kedzie would’ve liked to have advertised and implemented the sale with events like homecoming a bit more.
“Since this was the inaugural version of the sale, we weren’t sure what to expect, so we probably next year, would scale it back a little bit and have fewer plans for sale that we had to take care of because they also took up a lot of space in the greenhouse. But moving forward, maybe advertise it a little more ahead of time,” Kedzie said. “We will be having a similar type of thing next year, we’re hoping to line it up a little bit better with homecoming and some of the homecoming events.”
