Chills crawl up your spine and goosebumps cover your arms, but you can’t keep your eyes off the screen. We ride rollercoasters to feel a thrill just like we watch horror movies to be engulfed in fear, but here’s the scary truth: some horror movies don’t do the trick. Here is my review of three of this season’s new horror movies so you know which ones to stay away from and which you must watch.
Long Legs
This disturbing movie will haunt you for years. As a horror movie guru I don’t typically get psychologically scared, but “Long Legs” was different. The story follows an FBI agent looking to solve a long span of murder cases linked to a killer who goes by the name Long Legs.
For years girls born on the 14th of any given month have had their families murdered by their fathers and at every crime scene there is a coded letter signed long legs. The movie will keep you guessing until the last second. I got chills without the movie having to incorporate a bunch of jump scares to catch me off guard. Instead, the scariest part about this movie was the unsettling realism of it all and intricate scriptwriting. The movie incorporated a lot of gore and had great SFX makeup along with lots of distinct stylistic choices that immersed you into the world. All of these factors gave the movie a 9/10 on spookiness.
The overall quality of the movie was a 10/10 based on the grainy cinematography and dark scenes used in each set. On top of that, Nicolas Cage’s performance of the monster “Long Legs” was so flawless and creepy that I’m questioning his sanity. Do not watch this movie if you don’t want to be haunted by long legs this fall season, but if you love a good thriller it is a must-see.
Apartment 7A
The suspense was unreal. The horror movie “Apartment 7A” takes you back to the 1960s following a struggling dancer “Terry Gionoffrio” longing to see her name in lights. When she injures her foot dancing she finds herself at rock bottom and hopeless. Terry takes painkillers to get through auditions but then passes out on the street which you think is due to her overdosing.
An old rich couple finds her sick on the street and they take her in. They spoil her with gifts and an apartment next to theirs, but what do they want in return? You have to watch this movie to find out and trust me you won’t regret it. The music and overall time period of this movie coincide making the scenes powerful and unique.
The film itself is not that scary due to the beginning setting it up as if it were a drama, but halfway through the movie takes a turn incorporating jump scares and gore. Suspense was used so well in this film it even made me look away during certain scenes due to discomfort. The quality of the movie is amazing!
If you are a fan of “Inventing Anna” on Netflix Julia Garner the lead in “Inventing Anna” takes on the role of “Terry” in “Apartment 7A”. Garner’s performance was once again deeply captivating bringing the movie to a new level. “Apartment 7A” has you questioning how far you would go for your dreams and what you would do for your own personal gain.
Speak No Evil
If you’re looking to be spooked this movie is not for you. “Speak No Evil” follows a family who befriends a strange couple on vacation in Italy. After this vacation the family is invited to stay on their new friend’s farm, but weird things start to occur and they question their safety.
Overall this was a fun watch, but a 4/10 on total spookiness. There was little to no gore in the entire movie which can be good or bad depending on your preference. The only thing I was screaming during this movie was how can you be so dumb as this horror movie had a big case of stupid main characters. To me, this ruined the ending and took away from the believability of the script making it predictable.
On the other hand, the acting was great along with the cinematography and storyline making the quality a 9/10. If you’re looking for a horror movie to watch I’d pass on this one, but if you just want a fun physiological movie to watch this is the movie for you.
Whether you hate horror movies or cannot get enough of them, I hope this guide lets you find the perfect horror movie for you. After all, no one wants to waste their time watching a boring movie. Don’t get too scared!
