Hoco Dress Trends: Are They Good, Bad or Just a Phase?

With homecoming right around the corner, more and more people are searching for the perfect look. Dress trends are constantly changing and becoming more and more creative every year. Whether you are into a more simple strapless look or a bold pattern, 2025 dress trends offer something for everyone without feeling overdone. Here is a look of what is actually trending, and what is worth skipping:

  • A classic black dress is a closet staple. Although sometimes boring, a dark dress like this one can be completely customized when paired with a fun or colorful heel or flat. The bright shoes make the outfit pop without too much effort. You can dress it up or down depending on the look you want. Overall, this is a reliable combo that is both cute and versatile. • Floral pattern dresses are always popular and perfect for a simple but still fun look. The patterns can be bold or subtle but always add some interest to your outfit. They work well if you want something other than solid colors without going overboard. Depending on the color, they can be paired well with a white or cream shoe, which always looks great. Overall, floral dresses are a simple way to add fun to your dress. Illustration courtesy of Greer Pease, ’27.

  • Silk homecoming dresses have become popular in the last couple of years, they stand out for being not only gorgeous but comfortable and casual. The glossy finish of silk looks luxurious but also modern. Colors are also super versatile and there is a super wide range of colors that look great in silk. You really can’t go wrong with a silk dress. Illustration courtesy of Greer Pease, ’27.

  • Polka dots are very trendy this year, and bring a very playful and retro look which makes them stand out. Paired with a solid color heel is timeless and makes them a very popular choice this homecoming season, rightfully so. Illustration courtesy of Greer Pease, ’27.

Wait on the Wallet: Helldivers 2

Cover art for the video game Helldivers 2. Image courtesy of alphacoders.com

Chaos, clamoring and colorful armor are the only words that can sum up the war-like experience of Helldivers 2: a horde shooter set in the far future that pits a united Earth against robots, alien bugs and contested zombies. It may look fun, but is it really worth the $40 price tag?

The short answer is yes, and the long answer is also yes. Helldivers 2 has almost entered its third year of ongoing development, and while the game has taken a few hits throughout the years, it has always proven to be a breath of fresh air and a fantastic take on the newly popular horde shooter genre in video games.

The plot of Helldivers 2 is simple; you are a soldier of a united Earth deployed onto the battlefield of a second galactic war that pits you against three major factions: the Terminids, Automatons and the Illuminate. The Terminids are alien bugs, and they serve as the easiest faction to fight in the game. Meanwhile, the Illuminate (also the newest addition of factions within Helldivers 2) are an advanced faction of alien lifeforms who spread a disease that infects civilians (essentially space zombies). They can be seen as the middle ground of the three factions, the medium difficulty. The hardest faction to fight is the sentient robots, known as the Automatons, who utilize tanks and armored fortresses in their battles. They are easily the most difficult, as they present a wide range of bulky enemies that make their defeat much more difficult than it seems.

The gameplay of Helldivers 2 is simple. Use your wide range of weapons and strategems (aerial attacks and support weapons you can call in missions) to decimate and crush your foes. One of the best parts about Helldivers 2 is the mechanics, the utter feeling of being able to dive and duck while screaming at your enemies is a profoundly reveling experience. The gameplay and the satire of Helldivers 2 (the developers essentially use political satire as a great comedic factor within the game) make the game such an enjoyable experience, with or without playing with friends.

With the newest update that brings Xbox players to the game (as well as a new enemy type and cosmetics), the Helldivers 2 player count and active missions have skyrocketed, making the game one of the most played around the world. Helldivers 2 is the least greedy game and the easiest to progress and gain new cosmetics of all time. It is absolutely worth the very low price of 40 dollars (most video games cost 70 dollars), and the epic moments of the game are undoubtedly worth it.

The Club Chooses You

On Thursday, September 4, the annual activity fair took place, where clubs, both new and returning, encouraged students to get involved.

Project Blush
With all the current emphasis on self-care, it’s easy to overlook the fact that many people don’t even have access to basic personal hygiene. Project Blush is a newly offered initiative focused on providing essentials for the underserved communities in Barrington. They meet up twice a month after school and once before to brainstorm ideas for fundraisers and put together care packages containing items like toothbrushes, deodorant and other hygiene products. Then they distribute these care packages across shelters in Barrington. Additionally, Project Blush is a great way to earn service hours, with each member receiving one at the end of meetings.

Crochet Club
Another exciting group introduced this year is Cthe rochet Club. Every Wednesday, the club meets up to practice their skills and hang out. They get to learn a new pattern and/or stitch, making it beginner-friendly but also fun for those who already have experience. It’s also very low-commitment, so people with time constraints don’t need to worry about being at every meeting. Besides the actual crocheting, it’s just a great way to make friends and meet people with similar interests. Crochet Club combines socialization, learning new skills, and doing something you enjoy without any added pressure, making it a great addition to the school.

Yes! Club
Youth Engagement in Society Club, or Yes Club, is an opportunity for students looking to get involved in local politics. At each meeting, they discuss what the following month will look like concerning volunteer opportunities and political forums. Their main focus is community involvement and civic engagement. Sarah Chitavi, the president of the Yes club, shared that in 2025, the club raised over $4,000 for Hope For Haiti, an organization that works to alleviate poverty in southern Haiti. “It’s not just about community service, it’s mostly things like getting involved with your local state representatives, your school board administration, to have students understand that they can change anything that they want to change, it’s not all up to adults,” Chitavi said.

Music soothes the soul, especially during these chilly winter months—here are five song recommendations handpicked by our team to warm your heart.

1.Print Editor-In-Chief Abby Monk recommends the EP “I Can Be Your Mother” by Sofia Isella.

When “I Can Be Your Mother” hit the 2024 music scene from alternative/indie rock artist Sofia Isella, I was floored. The extended play’s exploration of toxic relationships, body image and womanhood weaves perfectly with its unsettling “horror” vibe and Isella’s gift for violin and poetry.

2.Print A&E Editor Adia Strunk recommends the song “Triple Dog Dare” by Lucy Dacus.

Music. Stories. Both, combined? Off of Lucy Dacus’s third album “Home Video,” you’ll find just that. The song “Triple Dog Dare”, a compelling soft tale that will lead to an ending with shiver-inducing instrumentals, is more than worth the listen. In fact, while you’re at it, give the whole album a shot!

3.Online A&E Editor RyAnn Brown recommends the song “Romantic Homicide (Live Version)” by d4vd.

Seeing D4VD live at Lollapalooza was unforgettable, and hearing the live version of “romantic homicide” in person only made the Phoenix performance version even better. The raw emotion in his voice and the intimate vibe brought a new depth to the song. It’s incredible how the live energy enhances the track, making it feel even more personal and moving each time I hear it. A performance that stays with you.

4.Staff Writer Annie Wu recommends the song “Sultans of Swing” by Dire Straits

“Sultans of Swing” was Dire Straits’ breakthrough song, inspired by an experience watching an amateur jazz band play in an empty pub. Mark Knopfler’s guitar solo in this song maintains its status as a classic in their discography. Its catchy riff and distinctive storytelling have made it an enduring anthem for music lovers around the world.

5.Staff Writer Timmy Walters recommends the album Take Me To Your Leader by King Geedorah

King Geedorah uses his words in this album in such a way that it makes you feel as though you’re in the song. The album takes a storytelling approach and helps the listener get invested in the story each song is trying to tell. I would recommend this album to anyone that is a fan of MF DOOM.

Happy 2025, everyone! To kick off the new year, we’re bringing you our first edition of the year full of beauty faves that our team can’t get enough of. From skincare to makeup, these five products are making waves as we dive into the new year.

1.Online A&E Editor RyAnn Brown recommends the  e.l.f. Glow Reviver Oil in Rose Envy.

I wear the e.l.f. Glow Reviver Lip Oil in Rose Envy every day, and it’s perfect! For just $8 at Target, it hydrates my lips without feeling sticky. The lightweight formula keeps my lips smooth and nourished all day long. It’s a must-have for everyday wear!

2.Social Media Manager Shayna Youkhana recommends Sol de Janeiro scent 59.

Sol de Janeiro scent 59 explodes the pleasant scent of fresh lavender and flowers throughout any room you walk through. I get the best compliments and you will too when you wear this delightful scent for $25 at Sephora.

3.Online Editor-in-chief Hannah Kim recommends nooni Korean lip oil.

This product is unique because it not only moisturizes your lips, but also leaves a long lasting stain. My favorite shade is Appleblacktea, which leaves a lasting stain of subtle red on my lips. It’s also quite affordable in my opinion, retailing for $13.99 on Amazon.

4.Print Sports Editor Simran Panwar recommends Urban Decay Setting Spray.

A lot of people in school wear makeup, and their greatest enemy is likely the infamous school air. Staying in school from 8:30a.m. – 3:22p.m. means that makeup will start fading away come 8:32am. How to defeat said enemy? Invest in a good setting spray. The Urban Decay setting spray makes your makeup feel like it’s locked in place while you’re locked in at school, and it does not let your concealer, blush or highlighter budge at all. Available at Sephora, Ulta, or Amazon starting at $18.

5.Staff Writer Benice Udeogu recommends Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen.

This is hands down the best sunscreen I’ve ever used. It goes on smoothly without leaving any white cast, and gives my skin a gorgeous, dewy glow while keeping it moisturized. My makeup applies beautifully over it, too. Totally worth every penny starting at $18.

1.Activity Recommendation: Staff Writer LauraAnn Serra recommends Ice Skating.

One of my favorite things to do on the weekends is ice skating. Not only is it a fun way to spend time with friends and families, but it is an awesome skill to learn. When it comes to practicing jumps and spins or just doing laps, I love using the ice rinks at Crystal Ice House in Crystal Lake.

2. Game Recommendation: Staff Writer Casey Swart recommends the video game Stardew Valley.

The culmination of every creative, enticing, addictive aspect of cozy games alike, Stardew Valley provides a completely magical storyline along with compelling yet relaxed gameplay. Creating your farm and interacting with the community are just some of the many features that make it the perfect escape from reality into a Pixelated paradise.

3. Product Recommendation: Editor-In-Chief Anika Wadhwa recommends Smiskis.

Smiskis are a collection of figurines, with each series showcasing a different theme. The best part? You won’t know which one you’ll get. Add suspense to your life and enjoy growing your collection. These make great gifts, too! Priced at $9.99 each and available on Amazon.

Welcome back! Here are a few handpicked recommendations to help you stay on track and make the most of finals week.

1. Drink Recommendation: Print Editor-in-chief Abby Monk recommends the London Fog Latte from Starbucks.

Going into the colder months of winter, there’s no better time to enjoy the Starbucks London Fog Latte. This warm mix of Earl Grey tea, lavender and vanilla brings out a cozy feeling for those foggy days, and holds its title as my favorite Starbucks drink.

2. App Recommendation: Social Media Manager Shayna Youkhana recommends the game Block Blast!

The app Block Blast! has been spreading like a wildfire. The satisfying yet challenging game is everywhere, and I’m not complaining. I find myself constantly clicking on this app ready to try and beat my high score. Block Blast! allows you to think critically while also having fun.

3. App Recommendation: Staff Writer Mia Rao recommends the app Google Keep.

The app Google Keep has transformed my high school experience. This digital planner has an aesthetically pleasing layout that conveniently records all of my homework assignments. Plus, the Google feature allows me to access it across all my devices. Take advantage of this service provided by the school and download it now just in time for finals season!

1. Drink Recommendation: Online Sports Editor Olivia Peyton recommends Starbucks Iced Gingerbread Chai.

The Iced Gingerbread Chai is arguably my favorite fall drink from Starbucks. The creamy cold foam, the delicious milky chai. It’s basically Christmas in a cup. This drink is especially great for all the people who hate coffee, but still want a coffee-ish drink.

2. Music Recommendation: Staff Writer Morgan Smith recommends the EP, “A Very Laufey Holiday” by Laufey.

This EP is perfect for the holiday season. Laufey’s voice is pure magic and her modern jazz vocals are addicting. This EP includes covers to Christmas classics as well as original music.

3. Activity Recommendation: Staff Writer Julian Vazquez recommends the Chicago Botanical Gardens Lightscape.

The Lightscape is a seasonal event hosted by the Chicago Botanical Gardens to celebrate the winter holiday season. It starts on Nov. 15 and carries through to the beginning of January. It consists of many different light features, beverages, food & drink. Perfect for family outings just be sure to dress warm!

1. App Recommendation: Staff Writer Casey Swart recommends Tune Track.

While Spotify wrapped is always a Christmas present in itself, the app Tune Track provides your music statistics from not only the past year, but the past month, six months, and lifetime of your Spotify or apple music account. All encompassed in a single app, all year round.

2. Song Recommendation: Print Editor-In-Chief Sabrina Roach recommends “margarita sugar” by chrysalis (indigo + friends version)

Do you listen to Laufey, Mitski or Lorde? Do you love heart-wrenching vocals and comforting instrumentals? Maybe you have no idea what I’m talking about but need a song to listen to on the drive home in the dusk. “Margarita sugar” is the best song you’ve never heard of.

3. App Recommendation: Staff Writer Julian Vazquez recommends “Grammarly”.

An AI assistant that operates through your keyboard to correct grammar mistakes, tone, and clarity issues. Setup only takes a couple of minutes and you can use it in any circumstances you’d need a keyboard. The applications are endless and its benefits are enough to make it a standard routine throughout daily life.

Roundup Recs: Issue 1

The Roundup staff is always trying new things and falling in love with them. Check out our favorite picks of November. Who knows, maybe you’ll find something new to fall in love with?

1. Music Recommendation: Online Opinions Editor Ruby Nass recommends “That’s So True” by Gracie Abrams

Ugh, this song’s stuck in my head! Normally, I’d be annoyed, but its catchy bridge is too good. Check out “That’s So True” by Gracie Abrams on your music streaming platform, and let’s vibe to it together!

2. Movie Recommendation: Online Editor-in-Chief Hannah Kim recommends The Wild Robot.

This recent movie release has made unprecedented numbers at the box office and it’s no wonder why. The animation style is unique and incredibly satisfying for the audience to watch, and the plot is heartwarming- a quality in movies that hasn’t been successfully done in a while (in my opinion).

3. Show Recommendation: Online Features Editor Sasha Kassel recommends The Golden Bachelorette.

Photo from IMDb

The finale to the first season of The Golden Bachelorette just aired on Nov. 13. Skipping “show hour” at my house, I almost always retire to my bedroom after dinner. The Golden Bachelorette, however, pulled me in. “Golden Bachelorette” is unique from most other reality shows, and even the other shows are a part of the “Bachelor” string, thanks to its lack of drama and wholesomeness. It may not be the choice for the traditional reality TV fan, but I would highly recommend it to anyone trying to avoid more drama at the end of the day.
