The idea of music being connected to culture and a people is a concept that has been explored over the more recent years. The lines of culture have slowly been blurred over time. And though “black music” is a huge part of African American culture it’s not something easy to cover as it changes a lot over time. It’s not as simple as “rap” and even that has changed over the years, from different flows, beats, and rhymes (even things like mumble rap that has a ton of controversy, especially from older listeners). From the 2000s era with big names like Kanye, Lil Wayne, Jay Z, 50 Cent and even people like Eminem who changed the game and outlook on rap entirely. To the 2010s and 2020s with a more diverse, bigger group of rappers, the rap game has changed entirely. Again black music is bigger than just rap, it crosses over into many different genres, through many different artists. In honor of Black History month here are some younger/newer or underrated black artists I’ve enjoyed and some of their best work.
Rap
Doechii

Doechii may be a renowned name now, but not too long ago, she was relatively unknown. From Tampa, Florida, she first gained attention with her unique blend of rap, R&B, and experimental sounds. Her breakthrough came with viral hits like “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake,” showcasing her sharp lyricism and bold style. Since then, her music has consistently stood out, with few missteps, as she continues to push boundaries and captivate listeners with her creative vision.

Despite her lesser-known status, Libianca’s diverse catalog showcases her versatility and talent, making her an artist to watch as she continues to grow.

Summer Walker

Summer Walker, originally from Atlanta, Georgia, is best known for her standout features and collaborations, which have helped solidify her place in the R&B scene. Often compared to SZA, Walker shares a similar emotive, raw style but tends to have a slower-paced, more laid-back vibe in her music. Her introspective lyrics and smooth vocals resonate with fans of alternative R&B, making her an artist who effortlessly captures deep emotions while maintaining a chill, relaxed sound.
