While sports fanatics overanalyze basketball games in the spirit of March
Madness, nearly 800,000 French students around the world are creating their own brackets. Only instead of shooting hoops, the participants in Manie Musicale de Mars are striking cords in an intense music battle.
Students enrolled in French courses spent the month of March choosing
their favorite songs produced by widely talented Francophone, or French speaking, musicians. They now have the opportunity to vote for the song artist who will become the ultimate champion.
This competition is highly anticipated every year, and that’s for good reason. Manie Musicale de Mars consistently succeeds in bringing students together in celebration of the French language and culture. From country music with a twist to fun choreographed dances, you won’t want to miss this year’s heartwarming and inspirational music choices. Here are a few of my favorite songs!
On se moque

The rhythm of Lou and PETITOM’s song “On se moque” is intoxicating. But the superb fashion choices and impressive vocals truly marked my obsession with this song. The title translates to “we mock them,” referring to the song’s message of pursuing love, regardless of the disapproval of others. The powerful message and the impressive choreography earned “On se moque” a victory in the preliminary round. Do Lou and PETITOM have what it takes to be the 2025 Manie champions?
Comment tu vas?

Impressive choreography is a theme that continues amongst the Manie contests this year, and “Comment tu vas” is no exception. Song artists Elois and Ridsa execute this perfectly with a country theme, featuring dancers in traditional cowboy and cowgirl outfits kicking up dust in the countryside. I appreciated this new style of music as it brings an air of liveliness to the competition. You will not want to miss “Comment tu vas” as it explores the desire to reconnect with past love.
Minimum ça

Without a complete understanding of the message or meaning, anyone can appreciate Dr. Yaro’s fun vibes in “Minimum ça.” The chorus is super catchy, and it is almost impossible to resist dancing along with Dr. Yaro and his fantastic team. Every movement is purposeful, and even the lightning choices create a unique contrast for the viewers. Plus, all the performers in this music video look excited to be there, which is the entire point of this competition.
Quitte

Ouidad is a returning artist to the Manie Musicale de Mars competition and a personal favorite of mine. I enjoyed her previous song entry, titled “Casa,” as it explored her Moroccan heritage, highlighting traditional dance and the importance of family. By contrast, “Quitte” explores the idea of love fading and choosing to end relationships devoid of emotion. The tone of the songs differ greatly, with the former being more personal while the latter has more broader applications. I see this as a testament to her versatility, and I appreciate that her talents translate across multiple genres of music!
The Manie Musicale de Mars 2025 competition runs from March 5 through April 8. Don’t miss this fun celebration of French culture!
