Barrington 220’s 7th annual safety week takes place the week of Sept. 15-19. Each day, schools participate in different drills required by the state, such as fire evacuation, law enforcement (lockdown), bus evacuation and severe weather drills. In addition, there are other important topics discussed throughout the week, such as pedestrian safety, online safety and “See Something, Say Something”.
The Barrington Police Department will be on campus during the fire evacuation and lockdown drill to help simulate the scenarios. The schools partner with local law enforcement for the lockdown drill, helping simulate a real scenario by teaching the “Run, Hide, Fight” model, which is recommended by the Department of Homeland Security.
Outside of safety week, Barrington 220 has recently implemented other safety measures, such as door alarms, secure vestibules, better surveillance, etc. Since 2018, the district has incorporated a director of safety and security, as well as a committee consisting of district members, law enforcement and first responders who meet regularly to try to create a safe environment and choose the best safety practices for the schools.
In addition, school resource officers were added to the middle schools and high schools in the past few years to ensure safety. According to the district website, “School Resource Officers help to enhance security measures at schools and build relationships with students to create environments where students feel supported.”
