While walking in the hallway, a student to the left of you is walking with his headphones in. He’s probably bopping to the best song of all time. Is he listening to rap? Hip-hop? Country? No, he’s listening to “I Want to Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston. You know how I know?

That guy is me.

“I Want to Dance with Somebody” is undeniably, the best pop song of all time.

Tell me to my face it is not a banger. That’s right, you can’t.

Living a life with two parents who barely tolerate new generation music introduced me to 80’s music. Yes, I also do listen to modern music as well as my oldies. But modern music is way overplayed. My parents keep telling me that modern music is just made for money and old music is made from the soul.

Whitney’s lyrics just make me feel some type of way. “Oh, I wanna dance with somebody/I wanna feel the heat with somebody(line 8&9)” really makes you want to move. I remember one day in my room, I had this song on repeat and I could not stop dancing to it. You can’t not dance to this song it really makes someone move, no matter how you are feeling. Anyone can listen to this song anytime, anywhere.

For example, walking through the hall, listening to music with friends, a wedding or on a drive. If you are not bopping to this jam, you are missing out on real music.

Junior, Brandon Kane, really expressed that Whitney’s song is no question the best pop song of all time.

“I Want to Dance with Somebody” is no doubt on my top three song of all time,” Kane said.

After a look on Kanes playlist, you would believe he listens to just rap, but really there was a variety of music on it. Kane really has a soft spot for Whitney’s song, even if his playlist is full of rap.

Not only Kane, but worldwide, Houston is listened to. Houston broke numerous records with this song. According to Music Outfitters, within 6 weeks after release day, it reached the top on “100 hit billboard” in 1987. When 80’s music was evolving, to be on the top 100 was impressive, let alone being the top of the list. This really gives you the scoop on how many people loved this song. It’s no surprise that people still do.

I discovered this song long ago, before I could even remember, and I every time I listen to it like its my first time. The way Houston hits those high notes gets me in my feels. Try it, listen to it right now. Close your eyes, listen to the lyrics closely and you’ll truly feel the vibe that this song gives me when I listen to it. I listen to Houston’s music a lot throughout school or to get me hyped up for something.

Junior Jerry Doheny shares his experiences with this song, “ I remember after our away game, someone was playing that song on the bus and everybody on the bus looked at each other, and just started singing out loud and dancing. It’s contagious.”

So next time you see me in the hallway, you already know what I’ll be listening to.
